For everyone's consideration, the last tax renewal issue was passed by the voters. The district re-hired the construction manager to implement the projects for these funds. In other words, they just haded it to the people who did the work before without going out for competitive proposals for these services. The firm who was hired to do this work is a Swedish headquartered company. There are plenty of local companies who can perform this work succesfully.

For those wanting to Light up, you can still smoke in Casinos, even though their revenue is down 1.48% in 2009.

Poor Casinos only had average December revenues of $1.17 million DAILY.

At least the Legislature knows not to mess with that cash cow.

Tobacco and politicians continue to be very strange bedfellows. If this initiative is successful in cutting smoking, which is doubtful, one wonders when we will hear laments from Lansing regarding the drop in cigarette tax receipts?

Meanwhile Lansing funds initiatives by "borrowing" against future Tobacco legal settlement funds (started in 2005). Just spending the windfall $300 million annually, wasn't enough. In actual proven programs that curb cigarette use, Michigan is 48th in spending (which was one of the purposes of the Tobacco Settlement).

This is just another chapter in this strange government relationship. And one still wonders . . .

What is more addictive . . . . .

Nicotene to the Smoker ? ? ?

or . . .

Tobacco money to the politician ? ? ?

How dare you disagree with a friend! :-)

Now that I know we're represented by folks who are willing to occasionally put aside their core principle belief of less government intrusion, I'll start thinking of something I really don't like and find offensive, so that I can call them and ask them to intervene. :-)

I am going to have to disagree with my good friend Willy. I consider my right to live in a world free of second hand smoke to be more sacred then the rights of those who pollute my personal space. Kudo's to Rep Crawford and Sen Cassis for making Michigan the 38th state to ban smoking in most public places. Perhaps more smokers will consider quiting now that there favorite venues are now off limits.

Keep non-residents out I am all for it. My sister's house has been broken into and two cars stolen TWICE because of basketball courts installed in a park across the street from her. Not one criminal captured was from her city.

Wow,

I ahven't logged on in quite a while and I am appalled at some of the comments that are so negative towards our city government. T believe that most of our city employees and elected officials do try to do the best they can and most of our services are delivered very well.

Bringing up old mistakes by people who are not even here anymore (Sandstone) is unproductive at best, if not bordering on destructive.

With regards to Fountain walk....that is a private entity's business venture. I do not want our city government to dictate what can be built and what can't be built. Yes, it went bankrupt, but that is not the city's fault. As long as business plans and building proposals meet with the planning requirements that have been carefully thought out....the city should allow private enterprise to invest and make a go of it. Not every business venture will work out. I was actually upset that the council was putting a roadblock up against hooters. I don't patronize that establishment but it wasn't a battle our council should have engaged in. Let free enterprise work its own path.

Special elections are part of our democratic process and allowed by law. We as voters should defend that right that we have. Agreed that it appears to be a waste of money, but that is the fault of the voters who failed to excerise their democratic right, or obligation in my opinion.

Dave - you are a true champion of our parks and I commend you on that. Even though I disagreed with you on this issue, I apperciate the venue offered here to ask the questions that I had and to offer my opinions.

SanityForOurCity - I do not care if your name is Mike, Joe, Bob, or Steve, that is irrelevant. I do not agree with your posts here. I believe the negativity is destructive at best. While I will defend your right to your opinion, I pray that you can find a way to express it in a productive way.

I do not understand the rant on privacy here. I beleive several people on here know who I am but that doesn't stop me from expressing my opinion.
